This report is about the book called “Great Expectations” and it was written by “Charles Dickens”.

It was first published in 1999 and consists of 114 pages including activities about the book.

Summary

Philip Pirrip, in short Pip; lost his parents and live with his sister Mrs Gargery and her warm hearted blacksmith husband Joe. When Pirrip was a child he used to go to the graveyard of his parents. One day thought the graveyard, the man with shabby clothes threaded Pirrip to bring him a metal file and some food. The man used a metal file to open the iron weight on his one leg and ate the food wildly with a forced help of Pirrip. Pirrip realized that he helped that man’s jailbreak.

When he was old enough, Pirrip started to go rich old women, Miss Havisham’s house for work and play. Miss Havisham was a strangest lady Pirrip had seen. She was wearing all white like a bride but the white colored rich dresses are faded. Miss Havisham has a sad story. Once upon a time she abandoned by her fiancé. Also there is a beautiful girl called Estella who is living with Miss Havisham. Pirrip was in love with Estalla at the first sight but the girl was arrogant to Pirrip.

Pirrip wanted to marry Estella but he thought he was not enough for her and with a great expectations he went to London to had success in his life. Miss Havisham sent to Estalla to London too. She wanted her to learn how to become a lady and also she has a plan. Miss Havisham was aware of Pirrip’s interest on Estella. Because of her sad story, she did not believe in Pirrip’s attention and she try to provoke Estella. Miss Havisham wanted to take revenge from men with using Estalla and Estalla married Mr. Drummle to broke Pirrip’s heart. Miss Havisham later apologizes to Pirrip as she's overtaken by guilt.

Althought the broken heart, Pirrip had a success in England and also he has a benefactor. He become very rich. Pirrip was adopted by a rich person when he was little but he did not know the name of that rich person. He thought s/he is Miss Havisham.

When Pip was walking to his house he encounter to strange man about his sixties. Pirrip asked him who did he looking for and he answered Pirrip. Pirrip learned he was his benefactor with complete amazement. He was the man who escaped jail when Pirrip was child and he was injured. There was a blood on his hands. He remained Pirrip that day and thanked him for helping him.

Eleven years later, Pirrip visited Miss Havisham’s old house for Estella’s memory. He heard she had

unhappy life, divorced from his husband. Also he heard she was death. When he was thinking of her he saw

Estella behind him. Estella said how sorry she is and then they decided to be friends forever

Character Description

* Philip Pirrip : He is the main character of the book. He is an orphan who is raised by his sister and his sister’s husband. He had great expectations in life and he wanted to become gentleman.

* Mrs. Joe Gargery : She is Pirrip’s sister and she had bad tempered character.

* Joe Gargery : He is the husband of Pirrip’s sister and he works as a blacksmith.

* Mr. Pumblechook : Joe Gargery's uncle, an officious bachelorand he is the person who first connected Pirrip to Miss Havisham and Estella.

* Miss Havisham : An old, strange and rich woman who lost her love and become revengeful to men.

* Estella : Miss Havisham’s adopted daughter and the girl Pirrip is in love.

*The Convict : He is escape from prison and Pirrip helps him kindly. Also he is the Pirrip’s benefactor.

Favorite Character

My favorite character is Miss Havisham because of her emotional character. Inside of her she has a good personality but she had disappointment in her life. Also she is helpful person because she adopted a girl and give job for little boy. She had effective way to assure people around her and it is not about money.

Miss Havisham lost her love when they are engaged. Her beloved leaved her and she will become desperate and mad. She wanted to take revenge from men. These bad feelings are changes her in a mental way and these change reflected to her appearance too. She always wears pale and faded white dresses like a bride with luxury jewelries.

In my imagination she looks like she is in Gothic Century, lives in dark and glorious demesne covered wild ivies. Probably she is mentally fall but she is always being a lady. Although she had bad feelings about men, she had good emotions and she is helpful person.

Setting Description

The story takes places between Philip’s home town which is not described and London – England. The style of book includes two types; romance and drama. The mood of the story is very deep and emotional.

Theme Description

The main idea about the story is exerting the effort to follow our desires. The costs are not important for our expectations. Also friendship, family and love is more important than money and fame.

My Opinion

In my opinion, the book has an important main idea and the writer has a good expression. I will absolutely recommend this book to others because it has affected me in an instructive way. Also I enjoyed reading the story which is very fluent.

Also the book has a movie which is modernization of Charles Dickens classic story finds the hapless Finn as a painter in New York pursuing his unrequited and haughty childhood love.
